How Smartphones are Changing Kids' Spines—and What You Can Do About It

Is your child spending a lot of time hunched over their phone? It's more and more common for many school-aged kids to spend hours a day in a very unhealthy posture.

And if you're concerned about their spinal health, that’s a good first step. They need your help to protect their spines.

Too much time spent hunched over can have lasting effects on your child's spine.

That forward head position kids adopt while texting, scrolling, or gaming is changing how their spines develop.

I see it every day in my practice: neck pain, slouching, shoulder tension, and fatigue showing up earlier and earlier in kids and teens.

The best thing you can do is intervene as early as possible. Once you understand what’s happening—and how to help—your child’s posture, comfort, and confidence can all improve.

The problem: too much screen time, too little alignment.

Kids and teens spend hours each day looking down.

When their head tilts forward—even just 15 to 45 degrees—it puts massive pressure on their neck and upper back. Over time, that pressure strains the muscles and ligaments that support the spine.

The result is what many people now call tech neck—rounded shoulders, a forward head posture, and highly uncomfortable stiffness.

Before the 21st century, it wasn't all that common for kids to complain of back and neck problems.

We used to only hear these complaints from our elders. If you’re hearing these complaints from your kids, it’s not a great sign.

Some early signs of postural problems include:

  • Slouching when sitting or standing

  • Complaining of neck or upper back pain

  • Rubbing their shoulders or stretching their neck often

  • Feeling sore after long screen sessions

  • Having trouble sitting upright for long periods

These are early clues that their posture is under strain. Without changes, these habits can lead to lasting spinal imbalances and chronic pain as they grow.

How do posture problems from phone use affect growing bodies?

When a child’s head moves forward, every degree adds extra pounds of force on their neck.

At a 45-degree angle, the neck can experience more than 50 pounds of pressure.

Muscles fatigue quickly, and spinal curves begin to flatten or over-accentuate to compensate.

Externally, this looks like a slouch—but internally, it affects far more than appearance.

Poor posture can limit ribcage expansion, making deep breathing harder.

It can also lead to frequent headaches, tight shoulders, and reduced energy.

In teens, who already spend long hours studying, scrolling, or gaming, this cycle often continues.

Pain leads to slouching, and slouching leads to more pain. It becomes an endless cycle without proper treatment and behavioral interventions.

Why kids and teens are especially at risk:

Children’s heads are proportionally heavier than those of adults, which means their neck and back muscles have to work harder to support them.

Their head weight combined with rapid growth, heavy packs, and the constant pull of gravity is the perfect setup for postural strain.

It’s not that kids are doing anything “wrong.” They’re simply adapting to a digital world that wasn’t designed for growing bodies.

That’s why awareness—and proactive care—make all the difference.

How chiropractic interventions can help young people with tech neck issues.

As a chiropractor, I see the effects of screen posture on kids and teens every week. The good news is that their bodies are incredibly adaptable.

Through gentle, age-appropriate adjustments, we can help restore healthy movement and alignment.

There are also practical posture strategies that families can use right away.

The real progress towards stopping tech neck happens off the adjustment table.

It’s not just about fixing pain. It’s about helping kids get stronger, breathe easier, and stand taller—physically and emotionally.

These are my top posture and smartphone tips for families.

I often teach families simple ergonomic habits to protect growing spines. These small adjustments make a big difference:

Device and Posture Positioning

  • Hold phones at eye level instead of down in your lap to prevent “tech neck”, perhaps using a pillow under the arms

  • Sit or stand upright—avoid hunching or rounding your shoulders

  • Have kids spend some time on their bellies on the floor when using their technology, with elbows propped up on the floor

Hand and Wrist Positioning

  • Use both hands for typing to spread the workload evenly

  • Keep wrists straight and relaxed; avoid gripping tightly

  • Switch hands often to prevent overuse and strain

Breaks, Stretches, and Tech Tools

  • Take movement breaks every 20–30 minutes to stretch and reset your posture

  • Use voice commands or dictation when possible to limit repetitive hand motion

  • Make sure kids have plenty of movement and non-screen time in their daily lives

Even one or two of these habits practiced consistently can make a big difference in spinal health.

Paying attention to your kid's posture matters right now!

The average teen spends four to six hours a day on their phone—that’s nearly 1,500 hours a year of downward neck pressure! And let's face it, teens are highly unlikely to be focusing on proper phone ergonomics.

This unhealthy habit sets the stage for chronic pain and postural issues later.

The sooner you help your kids build healthy posture habits, the easier it is to prevent the long-term effects we're starting to see in teens and young adults.

Chiropractic care can help if tech neck is already starting to take hold.

Has poor posture already caused muscle imbalance or spinal restriction? Chiropractic adjustments can help restore normal motion and relieve tension.

Regular care supports the spine’s natural curves, balances the nervous system, and helps kids adapt better to physical stress. It also helps to have extra eyes on your kid's posture.

Most parents tell me their kids feel better within a few visits.

They have less stiffness, fewer headaches, and more energy.

Over time, we see improved posture, stronger muscles, and a better understanding of how to move well in the digital world.

Once posture awareness becomes part of your child’s day:

  • Pain and stiffness ease up

  • Shoulders naturally roll back

  • Breathing deepens

  • Confidence improves

Over time, those small changes in movement and alignment create stronger muscles.

Learning these healthier habits early will affect how good your child feels later into adulthood.
