Acupuncture

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture may be a relatively new arrival to the health care landscape here in the western world, but this remarkable practice has been used to treat pain and dysfunction in the body for nearly 7000 years. Early Chinese physicians mapped an energy network (also known as meridians) located just beneath the skin. These meridians work with all of the body’s systems — circulatory, nervous, muscular, and digestive — and when one of those pathways is blocked or weakened, your body’s balance is thrown off-kilter.

Acupuncture stimulates specific meridian points to help restore harmony and encourage optimal function.

How can acupuncture help me?
According to the World Health Organization, acupuncture is effective for more than 100 conditions. At Cloud Peak Chiropractic, we employ acupuncture as part of our treatment plans for acute and chronic pain, migraines, tension headaches, neuralgia, bedwetting, asthma, allergies, skin conditions, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, high blood pressure, fatigue, and anxiety, as well as addressing addiction control in relation to smoking and overeating.

How does acupuncture work?
We use a completely sterile technique involving disposable acupuncture needles. We also offer a needle-free form of acupuncture using electricity which is a welcome alternative for children or adults with a fear of needles.

Does acupuncture hurt?
For most people, acupuncture is a painless experience. You may feel a dull ache or tingly vibration where the needle is inserted, and some areas may be more sensitive than others. That tingly feeling, which is referred to as de qi in Chinese medicine, is a sign that the meridians are being stimulated and the healing process has begun.

What is a treatment like?

We bring you to a private comfortable treatment room. You’ll be either lying down or sitting comfortably, the doctor inserts the needles, makes sure you’re comfortable, then leaves you to relax by yourself for 20-30 minutes. This is typically a very relaxing time. Many people take a nap!

How long will it take to see changes?

Every person and condition is unique. We often recommend starting with treatments twice a week for 2-3 weeks, then a few more spaced farther apart.
